Mike is a great teacher. He runs a class organization and cares about his students and their learning more than making money. If your're thinking about trying BJJ, but are hesitating, try Mike's school (Westchester or the Bronx). You'll feel welcomed and supported in your effort. Jordan

Mike Casey will not show you crazy/fancy moves like a flying armbar. However, he will help you realize the simplistic nature of the art. Receiving his black belt through Relson Gracie, he teaches the Gracie Way That is, becoming master of the basics. He runs each class with incredible focus on detail and reinforcement through drilling. After checking out other schools in the area, I went with Mike and I am very glad I did.

Mike is a very knowledgeable instructor who has been a direct student of Master Relson Gracie for a long time. He is technically sound and has a keen ability to relay his teachings in a form that is simple to understand, with a high attention to detail. If you are looking for an academy with a welcoming atmosphere and an undiluted version of Relson Gracie Jiu Jitsu, Mike is "the source" in New York.

Mike combines the experience and wisdom of one of the finest Gracie masters with an ability to articulate this that is second to none. He is always attainable and has a humility that is unusual among senior instructors. He places a premium on fundamentals and practical self-defense, while retaining an emphasis on student safetya rare combination. The training environment is friendly, supportive, and reflects perfectly the intent of Relson Gracie.

I really like Mike as an instructor. He is really good with the kids in the class. He treats the kids and the adults the same and makes us work out hard. I am glad that he is my head instructor. Many kids would benefit by learning from him. I am learning alot about ju-jitsu and I feel more confident with myself. I have alot of fun and learn at the same time. This is a great class.

He has helped many people through out the years achieve their goals of becoming champions.

Over a short period of time training with Mike I have fallen in love with BJJ. Mike creates an atmosphere where there isn't room for egos, a safe place to train with people of all skill levels. He has a way of explaining the mental approach to certain positions, that turns everything into a concrete idea. He also has a way of correcting you without making you feel stupid. As a beginner you get the idea that you can simply follow the proven process to becoming an intermediate or expert. I always look forward to training.

There are great martial artists and there are great teachers.. Mike just happens to be the best of both. Here's a few reasons why: He has a real talent for explaining things, breaking down the most difficult or complex moves into easy-to-understand, bite sized chunks that anyone can learn fairly quickly. Whenever you might be having difficulty with a certain move he seems to always pop up at just the right time to give you the exact adjustment you need to get the move perfect... And whenever you think you have a move mastered, he always has another small adjustment to give you to make the move even more dangerous. Finally, though Mike is a serious, high-level, top of the food chain, Relson Gracie Black Belt, he never ceases to make each class fun. Two hours often flies by and feels like 10 minutes. If you ever have the chance to learn from Mike Casey, jump on the opportunity and you will be very, very glad you did... but your opponents won't be :-)

After 47 years of Shotokan Karate, my first love, I understand that I have a weakness. Grappeling! In order to be a more rounded martial artist I look at the entire picture of self-defense. This entails long, medium, and short range tactics. Mike demonstrates how I can apply these BJJ techniques to be a victor in close combat scenerios. Mike's ultimate goal is how he may impart his knowledge & if you wish to learn from a person who enjoys sharing his knowledge of BJJ, he's the guy you need to visit. Keep up the good work Mike, It's been a pleasure learning from you!

All of the above comments really speak true to Mike Casey, but here are three reasons that I travel over an hour from NJ every week to train with Mike: 1) He's very connected with all of his students and knows most (if not all) of their strengths and weaknesses. He can speak to this off the top of his head and this even applies to students that he trained with years ago. This really speeds up student development and creates well rounded players. 2) His teaching style can simultaneously engage advanced and beginner students. When showing a single technique, he can simplify it to the core processes (the essence) or elaborate on all of the subtle nuances and contexts and setups. This ability provides the student with a single home for his journey from white to black belt. 3) He assists YOU in the development of YOUR Jiujitsu. We're all different (size, strength, flexibility), and different things work for different people. What works for Relson might not work for us. Its not enough to pay lip-service to the techniques and styles of the jiu jitsu masters who came before us. We need to see what works for us and then make it work. Mike has the ability to show the same technique to two different people in two slightly different ways, customizing it to the physical attributes of each, without compromising any effectiveness. One other thing I can add is that the guys that train with Mike are high quality jiujitsu players and people. But that shouldn't be surprising when considering the source of the instruction and leadership.

Mike Casey is an amazing instructor. I have taken many different martial arts through the years, and nothing has impacted my life as much as BJJ. There is such beauty in its simplicity, and as far as I'm concerned, nothing matches its real world practicality. I consider myself lucky to be taught by someone like Mike, who is a Black Belt directly from Relson Gracie, and to see techniques that are tried and proven through the years, as well as the evolution of new techniques he and Relson are constantly developing. Mike's method of teaching is traditional, practical and a lot of fun. He gives you all the tools you will ever need and then allows you to grow as an individual and make it work for You.

His philosophy on fighting is easy to grasp with a no nonsense approach. Like that of the Samurai it was not that fancy, show off technique that gets the job done but the most basic technique that finishes the opponent without out the opponent knowing they were in danger. I have been training at Relson Gracie NY with Mike for a little over 3 months now. When I came in I knew ZERO aside from what I could glean from watching MMA matches. Mike has developed a friendly environment at Relson Gracie Academy in the Bronx. All the upper belts are very willing to help you learn and grow. When I am not understanding something Mike is there to guide me step by step through the evolution of the move. He explains things carefully, sometimes using analogies, so you are able to see things that you might not immediately understand in another way. All in all, Mike is a very professional instructor and you can tell he takes great pride in advancing his students capabilities, and I feel very lucky to have such a great place to train in my neighborhood.

We all have different goals and motivations for learning marital arts. Regardless of your goals, no one who dedicates their time and money into training is ok with getting beaten up in a street fight! While most of us would avoid this type of problem when the problem chooses you it's a bad time to find out your training hasn't prepared you. And if in your classes the subject of "getting punched" doesn't come up, unprepared is what you'll probably be. At Mike's school you will learn Gracie Jiujitsu as Carlos & Helio Gracie intended it to be taught. Self defense first, human chess/sport second. Mike's instruction is top notch and he's built a great training environment with zero meatheads anxiously waiting to crack skulls! One of my favorite thing about Mike's academy is that he plans and posts the class schedules with the actual classes class that will be taught which allows you to plan ahead. This also to know where you're going and where you've been. While promotion isn't a matter of attendance ( and it never should be!) Having a clear idea of what is expected of you works better for me than the ever popular: "Get better at Jiujitsu." Try Relson Gracie Jiujitsu in the Bronx!

Signed the family up to take classes at the Relson Gracie Academy on Tremont avenue and I can tell you that coaches Mike and Rich are both great. Mike Casey is the head coach/owner and an old school Gracie guy.. as real as it gets.. a black belt under Relson Gracie.. super knowledgeable and a great motivator with a no nonsense demeanor. As a beginner I can tell the that the core/fundamental program is awesome.. It is real authentic Gracie Jiu-jitsu.. real combat/ street self defense. The Core program can honestly be done wearing no gi as it is all about real world scenarios, real Gracie style street combat that could save your life. Some schools have gotten away from original Gracie Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and focus entirely on "sport Jiu-jitsu" which has tons of rules and is all about getting points in tournaments.. this is not that school.. although some of the guys do compete.. The blue and higher ranking belts in the school are also very helpful and a great group of guys. Another great thing is that Mike gives you the lesson plan for the whole year, so you know exactly what to expect every class.. The facility is always clean, floor and wall padding always clean, two bathrooms, water fountain etc.. and I always find street parking. The kids program is great for the little ones learning to grapple and is primarily a bully defense program. It is very safe as they are not allowed to do submissions until they reach teenage years and enter the adult program. Overall highly recommended

I've been studying with Mike Casey and his crew for over a year now. Words can hardly express how happy I am with my decision to train here. I tried a couple of the bigger name schools before and felt more lost on my way out than I was on my way in. How does the fight start? How do you end up in this weird position? How useful is this in keeping you safe so you can get home? Mike removes all of those questions. He beaks things down into super simple yet highly detailed bites that immediately get the idea across while leaving room for that eventual "Aha!" moment when you put it together I practice. I walked out of my first day feeling safer already! They also have a great kids program. Kids are NOT learning how to be aggressive bullies that respond to violence with violence. But the lessons BUILD CONFIDENCE (something that can't be taught. That confidence makes kids able to help not only themselves but others if need be. Jiujitsu teaches control, patience, sensitivity and awareness not put your fists up and try to bash someone's skull before they bash yours. Kids need that even more than adults. Try Relson Gracie NY. Get healthier, more confident and learn techniques that can save your life or just make sure you can get home safely!

Today marks my 1 year training at Relson Gracie, and I'm glad I made that decision to walk through those doors. The head instructor Professor Mike Casey is well versed in his craft and his demonstration of techniques says it all. Every time I attend a class, even if it was a technique I previously learned, I always learn how to improve on it and make it more effective. Professor Mike along with his instructors are great, and are always willing to help out their students. The school is heavily focused on the self defense aspect of Brazilian Jiu jitsu just how Grand Master Helio Gracie wanted the art to be taught.

Felt great at first, but as I became more familiar with the Gracie combatives, sometimes it was taught different by higher ranks, that taught the class when the instructor was out which was a lot, as a beginner, mat time, is important to beginners, but as higher ranked students come in half an hour, before their time, they are allowed to step in , and take over the mats at times, they just move in as you trying to get in repetition of the technique before your class ends, and they jump on the Matt to get it in so to speak, as you watch, them take over the Mat which was a little frustrating, because your time and money is important, Gracie Jujitsu isn't cheap, at times as scheduled it's canceled. I decided to go elsewhere

We are very sorry to hear you did not enjoy your experience during your time here, our white belt class is definitely focused on beginners and the Essentials of Jiu-Jitsu. The upper level belts are meeting requirements to work with the white belts and having them work in gives the white belts a chance to get advice from, and feel more advanced technique. I will make it a point that everyone understands why we do this in order to get the most out of it. Thank you for this perspective and feedback. We will educate our future students accordingly about the learning process coming from multiple ranks and instructors. I will also say that we only close on a few major holidays or for extreme weather conditions where travel is considered unsafe. All of our instructors are trained and spend many years on the mats and must exhibit high values and standards before they are allowed to run class. I understand that voicing a complaint can be awkward but we have several ways to make the students opinions heard, including anonymous surveys. I wish you would have brought this to my attention and Im sure we could have met your needs. We are extremely open and accessible to the student body and any concerns they have. I wish you the best Jorge and please know you are welcome back anytime, should you choose to return.

A great teacher for the kids and for the parents. He taught me as a parent that it's ok that my child wants to stick up for others because if we lived in a world that everyone ignores and looks the other way then bullies will win and this would be a horrible world. So I learned to accept my child as a someone that cares enough to stick up for others. Thank you Coach Mike!!

I trained and taught karate for many years and always wanted to get into Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Having no other point of reference I gave Michael Casey's school a try and soon found out there is no more legitimate Gracie School anywhere, much less in NYC. Michael maintains the philosophy (self-defense first, sport second) of the Gracie family that inspired a nation of martial artists in the early days of the UFC. He has, and shares with his students, direct access to Grand Master Relson Gracie and his brothers but just as importantly, he's cultivated the best group of assistant instructors and training partners I've experienced at any BJJ school (and I've now had the opportunity to visit quite a few). Whether you're looking for a long term adventure into a lifetime of Jiu Jitsu or just want to 'get in shape' with something more interesting than the drudgery of 'going to the gym' three days a week, I can't recommend Michael's school enough.
